Bolivian singer and composer, born in 1949 in Qala Qala in the Potosí department, who sings in Quechua and Aymara. Her songs come out of the old music of the Altiplano and of the Andean way of seeing the world, with Pachamama, the mountains, the birds and the sun at its centre. As a child she was not allowed to sing in her own language, and carrying Quechua and its tradition has been her life's work since.
Her high, almost flute-like voice follows the birdsong and the thin air of the altiplano. She has made more than twenty-five albums over six decades, and her recent records are produced with contemporary and electronic arrangements while the old Andean singing and the language stay at the centre.
She was Bolivia's ambassador to France from 2006 to 2010. She received the Songlines Music Award in 2024 and the WOMEX Artist Award in 2026.
