Japanese Zen Buddhist monk and musician whose sung settings of the Heart Sutra have been watched more than a hundred million times.
Kanho Yakushiji is a Zen Buddhist monk and a musician, and he does not treat those as two careers. He sings the Heart Sutra — the short text at the centre of Mahayana practice, chanted daily in temples across East Asia — in settings that keep the Japanese-Buddhist reading of it while letting a guitar and a recording studio in.
His videos have been watched well over a hundred million times, many of them filmed inside temples: Kaizen-ji in Ehime, where he is based, and Ikkyu-ji in Kyoto among them.
He has no separate website. His work lives on his own YouTube channel, which is where the link here goes.
“Through music and breath, I look forward with all my heart to sharing with everyone a resonance that crosses language and borders.”Kanho Yakushiji
