Lama Gyurme
Lama Gyurme was born in Bhutan in 1948 and was entrusted by his family at the age of four to the monastery of Djang Tchub Tcheu Ling, where his interest in sacred music showed itself early. He became a permanent resident there at nine.
He has lived in France since 1974 and has directed the Kagyu-Dzong centre in Paris since 1982, alongside Vajradhara-Ling in Normandy and, since 2011, a centre near Barcelona — all of them working with mantra chant and meditation.
His recordings, made with the pianist Jean-Philippe Rykiel, set the chants of his lineage against a spare instrumental setting and carried them to listeners who would never otherwise have heard them.
