Overview

What does toltec wisdom point to?

Toltec wisdom as taught today centres on don Miguel Ruiz's 1997 book The Four Agreements, which frames much of human suffering as the result of 'domestication' — the beliefs, judgements and agreements absorbed, often unknowingly, from family and culture. Practice consists of examining and consciously releasing these agreements to recover what the tradition calls the 'dream of the second attention': direct experience, undistorted by inherited belief.

The teaching draws its name and some cosmology from the historical Toltec civilisation of central Mexico, though contemporary Toltec teachers are working with a reconstructed and popularised lineage rather than an unbroken indigenous transmission — a distinction worth naming honestly rather than glossing over.

Don't take anything personally. Nothing others do is because of you.

Discernment

Clarity should include the human context.

The Four Agreements read as simple, almost self-help-like principles — their depth shows up in sustained practice, not in agreeing with them on first read. Be wary of teachers who present them as a quick fix.

Ask about contextIs a statement philosophical, meditative, relational or practical?
Notice powerHow are authority, money, intimacy and complaints handled?
Include embodimentDoes the teaching make room for emotion, the body and nervous-system limits?
Keep agencyA useful teacher supports clear choice rather than demanding surrender of judgement.
