American Zen teacher (Roshi) in the White Plum Asanga lineage who also teaches Theravada-derived jhana and heart (brahmavihara) practices as founder of Awakening Dharma.
Stephen Mugen Snyder, Roshi began a daily meditation practice in 1976 and has since trained across Zen and Theravada Buddhist traditions. He is a senior student of Roshi Mark Sando Mininberg and a transmitted teacher in the White Plum Asanga, the body of teachers in the Maezumi-roshi lineage, receiving Zen teaching authorization in both the Soto and Rinzai schools in 2022; he was separately authorized to teach in the Theravada tradition in 2007.
Snyder is the founder of Awakening Dharma, through which he currently runs an active schedule of weekly online meditation groups, day-long and multi-day online retreats, one-on-one coaching, and structured meditation-mentoring programs, alongside occasional in-person events and residential retreats. He has authored several books, including Practicing the Jhanas and Demystifying Awakening.
