Sosena Gebre Eyesus
Ethiopian singer and begena player who performs traditional Orthodox mezmur, the hymns of devotional reflection, sung softly over the low buzzing drone of the ten-stringed lyre known as the harp of David. In the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo tradition the begena belongs to prayer and contemplation rather than to performance, and her recordings keep the instrument in that register.
