About the ensemble
Cappella Romana
Cappella Romana was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1991. Its name means Roman Chapel, and points at the medieval Greek sense of the Roman oikoumene: Rome and Western Europe together with the Byzantine empire of Constantinople and the Slavic world centred on Moscow. The ensemble works across that whole span, and is best known for its Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox repertoire.
It states its aim as experiencing and understanding the sacred music of the Christian East and West, and sharing that inheritance worldwide. It has worked with exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum, and records extensively.
