About the teacher

Geoffrey Shugen Arnold

Geoffrey Shugen Arnold, Roshi, trained under John Daido Loori at Zen Mountain Monastery in New York's Catskill Mountains, receiving dharma transmission in 1997 and later succeeding him as abbot and head of the wider Mountains and Rivers Order. His teaching continues Loori's integration of formal Zen training, including koan study, zazen and the precepts, with the Order's long-standing engagement with the arts and the natural world.

He leads the monastery's ongoing cycle of sesshins, training weekends and precept ceremonies throughout the year, typically alongside the monastery's other senior teachers.

We're seeing things as they are, and it's a much different world to be invited into, and to be called to attend to, and so I think there we see the enormous importance of practice, not as a way to retreat or turn away from, but rather to go right into the belly of things.
