American Zen teacher in the Sanbo Zen lineage and scholar of Buddhism and modernity, best known for linking Buddhist practice to social and ecological issues through his "ecodharma" work.
David Loy began Zen practice in 1971 under Yamada Koun Roshi and Robert Aitken, later completing formal koan study in 1988 and receiving the dharma name Tetsu-un as a dharma successor of Yamada Koun Roshi in the Sanbo Zen tradition. A former professor of Buddhist and comparative philosophy, he is the author of numerous books, including Nonduality: A Study in Comparative Philosophy and Ecodharma: Buddhist Teachings for the Ecological Crisis (2019), and writes regularly for Tricycle, Lion's Roar and Tikkun.
He currently leads a weekly Wednesday morning Zoom meditation and dharma talk from Colorado, lectures internationally, and leads ecodharma retreats and workshops; a busy autumn 2026 schedule takes him through Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy, alongside his ongoing base at the Rocky Mountain Ecodharma Retreat Center near Boulder, which he co-founded.
