Born Cheryl Greene, Venerable Thubten Chodron is an American nun in the Tibetan tradition and the founder and abbess of Sravasti Abbey — the only Tibetan Buddhist training monastery for Western nuns and monks in the United States.
She studied with the fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tsenzhab Serkong Rinpoche, Lama Thubten Yeshe and Thubten Zopa Rinpoche. With the Dalai Lama she is co-authoring The Library of Wisdom and Compassion, a multi-volume series on the Buddhist path.
She is a central figure in the reinstatement of the bhikshuni ordination, the full ordination of women, which had lapsed in the Tibetan tradition.
