About the teacher

Stephan Bodian

Bodian was ordained as a Zen monk in 1974 by Kobun Chino, having begun his practice with Shunryu Suzuki, and later left monastic life to train as a psychotherapist; he also served for a decade as editor-in-chief of Yoga Journal. His teaching draws on Zen, Advaita Vedanta and Dzogchen alongside Western psychology, and he is the author of several books, including Wake Up Now, Beyond Mindfulness, Meditation for Dummies, and his newest, Infinite Awakening: A Guide to Nondual Wisdom and the Pathless Path.

He founded the School for Awakening in 2007, a months-long program of teachings, self-inquiry exercises, meditations and live sessions that still runs, and offers individual spiritual counseling and mentoring by phone or Zoom. No upcoming in-person retreat with a confirmed date and specific location beyond July 2026 could be verified; check directly before planning to attend.

The fundamental love and truth we awaken to does not change, but our relationship to it, our appreciation of it, and our capacity to express it, does indeed unfold and reveal itself over time.
