Sain Zahoor
Sain Zahoor sang for decades at the Sufi shrines of Punjab before anyone recorded him. He travelled between them on foot, in the embroidered dress and with the ektara that have become his signature, singing the kalams of Bulleh Shah and other Punjabi Sufi poets.
He made no record until 2006, when a BBC World Music award nomination arrived on the strength of word of mouth alone. He has performed internationally since, but the shrine remains the setting his music comes from.
