About the teacher
John Philip Newell
Born in 1953 and ordained a minister of the Church of Scotland, John Philip Newell served as Warden of Iona Abbey from 1988 to 1992, a formative period reflected throughout his later writing on Celtic spirituality. He has since worked as a university chaplain and cathedral scholar, and now leads Earth & Soul, which he describes as a Celtic initiative of study, spiritual practice and compassionate action centered on the sacredness of Earth and every human being.
His books include Listening for the Heartbeat of God, Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul, A New Harmony, and, most recently, The Great Search (2024). He leads retreats and Iona pilgrimages built around this same Celtic vision of interconnectedness between the human and the natural world.
