About the teacher

James Martin

James Martin, SJ, is a Jesuit priest, bestselling author and editor at large of America magazine, as well as founder of Outreach, a website devoted to LGBTQ+ Catholic ministry. His public role centers on writing, media commentary and pastoral advocacy rather than teaching a specific contemplative technique, and his stance on LGBTQ+ inclusion has drawn sustained criticism from some conservative bishops and commentators, criticism he has consistently framed as a pastoral rather than doctrinal disagreement.

He remains an active, high-profile voice within American Catholicism, appearing widely in print, broadcast and online media; he met with Pope Leo XIV in September 2025.

“We strive to help LGBTQ Catholics know that God loves them, that they are at the heart of their church and that they have many gifts to offer the People of God.”
