Born in South India in 1958, Amma Sri Karunamayi is a revered spiritual teacher, humanitarian and embodiment of divine motherly compassion to devotees around the world. From an early age, Amma was drawn to prayer, meditation and selfless service. She later spent many years in deep meditation and spiritual practice in the sacred Penusila forest, where Manidweepa Mahasamsthanam now stands. Amma's teachings transcend distinctions of religion, nationality and background, guiding seekers towards inner transformation and Self-Realization through meditation, devotion, compassion and service to all beings.
Amma's spiritual mission is inseparable from Her humanitarian work. Through the SMVA Trust, She has established free educational institutions, healthcare services, clean-water initiatives, housing and community-development projects, disaster-relief efforts, food distribution programmes and support for underserved communities in India and internationally. During Her annual world tours, Amma conducts meditation retreats, offers individual blessings and Saraswati Deeksha, and presides over sacred Vedic fire ceremonies. Through Her teachings and service, Amma continues to inspire people to recognize the Divine within themselves and express that realization through love, kindness and responsibility towards the world.
