Ahmet Özhan

Turkish singer, born on 26 August 1950 in Şanlıurfa, who performs tasavvuf, the Sufi music of Turkey, and the ilahi hymns. He trained at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory and at the Üsküdar Music Society, and from the 1980s turned towards the Sufi repertoire alongside the classical Turkish music in which he first made his name. He is the twenty-second postnişin of the Cerrahi branch of the Halveti order.

About the artist

Ahmet Özhan

Between 1981 and 1991 he sang for TRT Istanbul Radio. In 1991 he took part in founding the Istanbul Historical Turkish Music Ensemble under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and retired as its general artistic director. The ensemble accompanies the Mevlevi sema, the ceremony of the whirling dervishes, at performances around the world.

He chairs the board of trustees of the foundation for researching and keeping alive Turkish Sufi music and folklore.
