Yair Harel
He studied with paytanim and musicians including the musicologist Andre Hajdu, Rabbi Meir Attyah, and the Persian zarb players Roger Yshay and Djamchid Chemirani. With Omer Avital he co-directs the New Jerusalem Orchestra, founded in 2009, and he is a member of the Tefillat Ensemble and the Oman Chai Ensemble. He co-founded Piyut North America.
He teaches traditional Jewish vocal music, Middle Eastern percussion and improvisation, and has led workshops and courses at the Hebrew University, the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies and the Jerusalem Academy High School for Music and Dance. The archive he founded began at piyut.org.il; that address now leads to the National Library of Israel.
