Shabnam Virmani

Indian documentary maker, singer and cultural worker from Bangalore, artist in residence at the Srishti Institute. In 2002 she founded the Kabir Project, two decades of travelling through Malwa, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab and Pakistan to record the living folk traditions around the fifteenth-century mystic Kabir.

About the artist

Shabnam Virmani

She made four documentaries that won National Film Awards, among them Kabira Khada Bazaar Mein, which received the Special Jury Prize.

Along the way she learned the Kabir songs from traditional masters such as Prahlad Tipanya and Mukhtiyar Ali, and now sings them herself with the tambura, in a programme she calls Songs of Mystics.

Shabnam Virmani's feature documentary from the Kabir Project, travelling with the folk singers who carry Kabir through Malwa and beyond, and asking what happens to a mystic's words when they are claimed by the sacred and the secular at once. It won the Special Jury Prize at the National Film Awards.
