About the teacher

Philip Goldberg

Philip Goldberg spent much of the 1970s teaching Transcendental Meditation within Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's organization before developing an independent, interfaith approach he describes as being a "pragmatic mystic," drawing on Vedanta, yoga, Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism. He is the author of American Veda, an award-winning history of how Indian spirituality and Vedanta entered American culture, and The Life of Yogananda, a biography of Paramahansa Yogananda for which he has also taught courses through the Hindu University of America.

He now lectures, leads workshops and teaches online courses (including a 10-week course on "How Hindu Dharma Transformed America," spring 2026), hosts the Spirit Matters podcast, writes the Practical Spirituality newsletter on Substack, and serves on the board of the Association for Spiritual Integrity; he relocated from Los Angeles to Great Barrington, Massachusetts in 2022.

I call myself a 'pragmatic mystic'. My Substack is called 'practical spirituality'. (from an interview at aninditaganguly.com)
