Vocalist and teacher trained in Indian classical music, who helps people open their own voice through it, and who also sings devotional qawwali in the traditional style.
Paulina Magus has been dedicated to Indian classical music since 2010, studying in India with teachers in both the Carnatic and the Dhrupad traditions. What she does with that training now is teach: she has developed her own approach to opening the voice, in which people work with their inner psycho-emotional states by immersing themselves deeply in this music. She shares it through online courses and in-person workshops.
From 2020 she also turned to Qawwali, the Sufi devotional music of the Indian subcontinent, and performs it in the traditional style. It remains a profound part of her path rather than the centre of her work.
Her own compositions sit somewhere between her training and ambient music. She works with voice, harmonium, pedals and effects, layering intricate melodic lines over hypnotic drones and long atmospheric textures, and calls what results immersive Ambient Meditations. The pieces are built to be entered rather than listened to from outside.
