The Monks of Keur Moussa are a Benedictine community in Senegal, begun in 1961 by monks sent out from the Abbey of Solesmes in France. After they were given a kora in 1964 they built a version of the instrument of their own, with wooden keys, and worked out a way of teaching it. Dominique Catta, one of the founding monks, composed liturgical music for the kora that sets plainchant beside texts in Wolof, Diola and Serer. The community received the Prix Albert Schweitzer for that work.
