Marouane Hajji

Samaa is sung listening and madih is praise. In Morocco the two run together in the repertoire of the zawiyas, where the Andalusian modes that came north from Granada were kept alive in a religious setting after they had left the courts.

It is group singing before it is solo singing. A lead voice gives the line and the others answer, with a frame drum keeping the measure, and the turn from one mode to the next carries the evening forward.
