With his ensemble he sings qawwali, the devotional music of the Sufi shrines of South Asia, built on call-and-response singing, harmonium, tabla and hand-clapping. He has performed widely in Europe and also in North America and New Zealand.

Kurdish-Iranian master of the tanbur, the sacred long-necked lute of the Yarsan, born in 1957 near Kermanshah. The Yarsan, also called Ahl-e Haqq, are a Kurdish religious tradition of their own going back to the eleventh century, with their own cosmology and scriptures: close to Sufism in spirit, but not the same thing and not a branch of Islam.
