About the teacher

Ashin Kheminda

Ashin Kheminda was born in Semarang, Central Java, in 1967 and trained as a bhikkhu in Myanmar before founding Dhammavihārī Buddhist Studies (DBS) in Jakarta in 2015. He has been a central figure in reviving interest in the Abhidhamma, the Buddha's systematic analysis of mind and mental phenomena, in Indonesia, and DBS has hosted the country's annual Abhidhamma Day since at least 2012. He is the author of several Indonesian-language works on the Abhidhamma and the Pāli canon, including Manual Abhidhamma and the multi-volume Studi Abhidhamma.

DBS runs a structured weekly curriculum from its centre in West Jakarta: Abhidhamma classes on Saturday evenings, Sutta study on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and a Pāli course Kheminda has taught in person since 2019. The centre also holds an annual multi-day Pabbajjā programme of temporary ordination, most recently its ninth edition. Teaching at DBS is conducted primarily in Indonesian, with only limited English-language material available, worth noting for readers who don't read Indonesian.
