Philip Kapleau
American Zen teacher (1912–2004) who went to Japan as a court reporter at the Tokyo war crimes trials, stayed to train for thirteen years in the Harada-Yasutani tradition, and came back with The Three Pillars of Zen, the book through which a generation of Westerners first met the practice. He founded the Rochester Zen Center, and the teachers in his line now work on four continents.
