Sanam Marvi

Sanam Marvi was born on 17 April 1986 in Hyderabad, in the Pakistani province of Sindh, and sings folk and Sufi music in Sindhi, Punjabi and Balochi.

Her repertoire is the kalam — the sung poetry of the Sufi masters. Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, whose shrine at Bhit Shah is the heart of Sindhi devotional music, Bulleh Shah, Sachal Sarmast and Amir Khusro all sit in it. This is shrine music before it is stage music: verse written to be sung at a saint's tomb by whoever comes.

She trained in the Gwalior gharana, the oldest of the North Indian classical schools, and names Abida Parveen among those who shaped what she does with it.
