Meditation teacher grounded in Kashmir Shaivism and tantric philosophy, formerly a Siddha Yoga swami known as Swami Durgananda.
Born in Manhattan in 1943, Sally Kempton met the Indian mystic Swami Muktananda in 1974 and joined his ashram, becoming a Siddha Yoga swami in 1982 under the name Swami Durgananda. After 28 years in the ashrams, she relinquished her vows in 2002 and continued teaching independently from Carmel, California, drawing on Kashmir Shaivism and tantric texts.
She authored several books, including Meditation for the Love of It and Awakening Shakti, and taught internationally until her death on July 10, 2023, at age 80. Her recorded teachings, courses, and meditations remain available through her website, maintained to honor and preserve her work.
