About the teacher

Prahlad Singh Tipanya

Prahlad Singh Tipanya sings Kabir in Malwa, the region of Madhya Pradesh where the fifteenth-century poet's verses have been carried in village singing for generations rather than read from a page. He performs with an ensemble of tambura, khartal, manjira, dholak, harmonium, timki and violin.

He was a schoolteacher before the singing took over, and much of his work has been about keeping Kabir's verse where it belongs — sung, argued over and lived with, rather than treated as literature. His performances are widely documented through the Kabir Project.
