The monks of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lamas, founded in Tibet in 1447 and re-established in exile at Bylakuppe in southern India. They tour with cham, the masked ritual dance, with the ritual music of long horns, cymbals and deep chant, and with the making of sand mandalas.
On tour they build a sand mandala over several days and sweep it away at the end, which is itself the teaching on impermanence rather than a demonstration of it. Their programmes also include prayer ceremonies and, in Britain, live accompaniment to the 1924 film The Epic of Everest, a century after monks from Tibet first toured the country at screenings of that same film.
