Brazilian singer and composer, born on 25 September 1943 in Cachoeira in the Recôncavo of Bahia. His music comes out of candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion of its own with Yoruba roots, centred on the orixás, and it carries the Yoruba singing and the percussion of the terreiros into song.
He joined the group Os Tincoãs in 1960, who brought candomblé singing into Brazilian popular music. He then lived in Angola for nearly twenty years, researching pan-African musical heritage with traditional masters there.
He remains active; his album Fogueira Doce appeared in 2017 and his later work has been recognised at the Latin Grammys.
“In our restless way of trying to understand this reality that envelops us, takes hold of Us, and at the same time escapes us, we are always awakened by the inquiry: Who we Are; Who we Were; What we will Be!”Mateus Aleluia
