Hamid El Kasri

Sufism · Gnawa · Guembri

Moroccan maâlem, a master musician of the Gnawa tradition, born in 1961 in Ksar El Kebir and living in Rabat. Gnawa is a Moroccan spiritual and ritual tradition with West African roots south of the Sahara, carried within an Islamic frame; its ritual heart is the lila, the night-long ceremony of trance and healing. He sings and plays the guembri, the three-stringed bass lute, and brings together the Gnawa rhythms of northern and southern Morocco.

About the artist

Hamid El Kasri

He began in the Chemeli or northern style of Gnawa, which differs from the styles of Marrakesh, and later brought the northern and southern repertoires together in his own playing. His last name is a stage name and means simply "from Ksar El Kebir".

He appears regularly at the Gnaoua World Music Festival in Essaouira, where he played with Joe Zawinul in 2004, with Karim Ziad in 2010 and with Snarky Puppy in 2018. That same year he performed with Jacob Collier at the BBC Proms and sang on Collier's album Djesse Vol. 1.
