Bhai Baldeep Singh
From 1988 onwards Bhai Baldeep Singh travelled through Punjab and Pakistan to record what was left of the oral kirtan tradition from the last musicians who carried it. He rebuilds the instruments that tradition needs and that had nearly disappeared with it: the taus, the dhrupadi rabab and the saranda. He also holds the Sultanpur Lodhi-Amritsari Baj, the percussion tradition of the Guru's court.
He is founder and chair of the Anad Foundation and of the Anad Conservatory, where he has taught since 1997 and where a school of luthiery passes on the making of the rabab, the saranda and the taus alongside the singing.
